Must Have

It’s a new year! Have you made a Dream board with your kids?

Happy 2023!! It’s a new year, new chapter, new beginning, new resolutions. No matter how we refer to these most of us can say we have some goals for the year! Have you asked your children what their goals are?

Have you put it on a dream board? Well first of all, what is a dream board? A dream board is a compilation of ideas, words, phrases, quotes, images, public figures, and anything else that reminds you of what you want to achieve. Your children will have a lot to contribute and creating one will teach them about goal setting.  This board can then keep them accountable and motivated to stay focused and work toward their goals. It will help them become more confident and feel like they can control what they achieve and what happens as a result.  It may even help guide them to decide what they want to be when they grow up!!

Ask them some guiding questions to help them set their boards up:

  • What are some of your favorite things?
  • What are your favorite activities or hobbies?
  • What parts of your life do you enjoy the most now?
  • If you had control, what kind of home life would you like to have?
  • What makes you happy?
  • What are your biggest goals or dreams?
  • What kind of skills would you like to have or new activities would you like to try out?
  • What kind of sports would you like to be able to do?

And then make it fun!! Get a large cork board for example. Flip through magazines and collect images that represent their dreams and goals. Use markers to embellish, highlight and decorate the images they found.

And in the end display it and discuss. Set it up nicely so it can be seen every day. Talk to them about how they may be able to achieve their goals alone and with your help. The board is evergreen so ask your child to spend some time with their dream board each day and to add to it or switch it up as goals do change and that is okay! Especially review the board once an accomplishment has been made! Have a dream board party for each time a goal was achieved and remind them of it if they go off track.  Make this a special bonding experience where you have an open discussion with your child about life, future and where they see themselves. The memories over the years will be priceless. And make sure they dream BIG!
