Get the best backpack for your toddler

Seems simpler than it is, but most parents spend time researching before they decide which backpack is right for their child, especially if they are just starting kindergarten. They are still very small and limited in what they can do when it comes to opening, closing, zipping, buckling, and overall maneuvering the backpack along with the weight of all its contents.

The rule of thumb is that childrens’ backpacks should be no more than 10 to 15% of their body weight. If your child weighs 50 lbs, they should have a 5 to 8 lb bag when full. The smaller your child, the smaller their bag should be.

For example, a small backpack measuring 12-14 inches in height is typically appropriate for kindergarten children. When shopping for a backpack, it is essential to consider your child’s size and weight. A backpack that is too big or too small can cause discomfort, back pain, and even injuries.

Aside from the look and design, the durability of the material used is very important when choosing the right backpack. It needs to last through a variety of weather as well as certain rough use of the child depending on their age.  Kids tend to throw their bags on the floor, in the corner, hallways, as they run off to chat with their friends. A cool feature to maybe look for is the backpack’s interior lining being waterproof, which makes it easy to wipe up any spills. And if you’ve ever met a toddler, you recognize just how important that feature is.

Also, do not forget to look for comfy straps. Make sure the shoulder straps are padded for comfort, and that they’re not thin, narrow straps. Other features like a padded back and a waist belt or chest/sternum strap can also help provide increased comfort.  One of our favorites is this adorable backpack from Pottery Barn Kids.

Budget is obviously an important factor in making the final choice especially as a new backpack is usually needed every new school year. As well, sometimes backpacks are lost 🙂  Keep the possibility of this in mind when deciding how much you can and want to spend on a backpack.
